How Often Should I Feed Them Carrots

We have established the fact that carrots are healthy for donkeys.

As a result, carrots should be given to donkeys as often as possible. This will do a lot of good to them health-wise.

However, it is best to give them carrots in moderate amounts.

A maximum of two carrots a day is advised. This is because ingesting too much carrot can cause problems for donkeys. 

It’s just the same with our human bodies. Certain foods, when consumed in excess, can be harmful to our health. As a result, we aim to cut down on them to stay healthy. 

In the same way, when it comes to health, we ought to ensure that our donkeys are safe.

Furthermore, it’s a good idea to chop the carrots into tiny bits.

This is essential as most donkeys, especially miniature can be extremely sensitive to large pieces.

Also, miniature donkeys should be fed with a lower amount of carrots (i.e. one per day).

Can Baby Donkeys Eat Carrot

However, the age of the donkey should be considered. Well, just as every other mammal, baby donkeys feed on their mother’s milk. 

Usually, baby donkeys should be feed with milk for at least 4 months. However, they can be fed milk for as long as 6 months.

This however is based on recent research.

After 6 months, a baby donkey can be introduced to normal feeds. At this point in their development, they will be mature enough to eat solids.  

But, it is best to cut the carrots into small pieces. This will enable the baby to eat them easily.

Can Donkeys Eat Carrot Tops 

It is perfectly safe for donkeys to eat carrot top. Tops of carrots are as common to donkeys as carrots themselves.

They provide donkeys with incredible benefits as well. However, the amount should be moderate as well.  

Also, when giving carrot tops to a donkey, make sure they’ve been thoroughly washed.

However, avoid feeding donkeys with the following foods;

  • Animal products such as meat, fish, or dairy.
  • Broccoli, cabbage, and other brassicas. 
  • Allums like onions, and garlic.

  • Any processed foods intended for humans.

Things To Consider When Feeding Donkeys Carrot

1. Moderation in giving treats

This is one important factor to consider when feeding donkeys. Feeding a donkey in moderation will help prevent obesity. Obese donkeys can suffer terrible health conditions. 

Also, a moderate diet aids digestion. Too many carrots can harm their digestive system.  

2. Feed them in bits

This is another important factor to consider. Especially for baby donkeys, carrots should be sliced into small pieces. It is also important you do this to avoid your donkeys from choking. 

3. Avoid forceful feeding

Sadly not all donkeys are fond of eating carrots. However, it’s never a good idea to force carrots on donkeys. It isn’t a good idea to force any other food or snack on them as well. 

But, donkeys can be encouraged to eat carrots instead. To do this, ensure you cut them into smaller bits. This will help them eat it better.

4. Avoid using your hands to feed them

It is most preferable to use a bucket or feeding trough while feeding donkeys. Feeding with your hands could be risky as donkeys tend to bite sometimes. 

However, if you must feed them with your hand make sure to do it the proper way. The most suitable ways of feeding donkeys with the hands include; 

  • Place a piece of carrot in the palm of your hand. Ensure your fingers lie as flat as you can get them. That way, the donkey will be less likely to accidentally bite you.
  • Hold your hand out in front of you, where the donkey can easily see it. As the donkey reaches for the carrot, gently and slowly raise your hand towards the donkey’s mouth.
  • Do not carry carrots in your pocket. Some donkeys will nip at your clothes if they know there is food in them. This can end badly for all parties.
  • Generally, donkeys only take bites that are small enough to chew. However, preferably, the carrots can be cut into smaller pieces.

What Are The Ways Of Feeding Carrots To Donkeys 

Donkeys can be given carrots in a variety of ways. Some of these varieties include;

Feed them with raw carrots: it’s best to feed them with carrots in their natural state. Avoid boiling or cooking the carrot. This allows the donkeys to nibble off one piece at a time. 

1. Chop the Carrots in bits: 

Carrots should be cut in bits and placed in the donkey’s trough or bucket. This is the best way of preparing carrots. It prevents them from choking. 

2. Combining carrots with other foods: 

Carrots can also be combined with other foods such as oatmeal, apple, orange, and pumpkin. This makes the carrot a lot more tasty and spicy. Surprisingly, most donkeys love this. 

Attempting this with donkeys that aren’t fond of carrots is a good idea. Maybe, they may fall in love with this combination. Who knows?
