What are fly sprays for alpacas?

Best Fly Spray for Alpacas

Basically a fly spray is a generic name given to a fly protectant mixture of chemicals, oils and insecticides that helps to kill or repel flies.

It can also be referred to as any mixture that is used to combat or drive away pesky stubborn flies, whether it is sprayed or not.

As long as the intended purpose of any product used is to protect your animals from flying insects such as gnats, house flies, stable flies etc then we will be using that term for it.

How do fly sprays for alpacas work?

There are several kinds of fly sprays for different types of flies and insects out there.

And they have different effects on the insects. Some will kill them while some repel them

A good fly spray for your farm animals should combine all these actions to get something that is very effective.

When it comes to killing the flies, some fly sprays will effectively kill all kinds of gnats and flies.

But this means that the insects need to land on the body of the alpacas before it can work.

To repel them, then whichever fly spray you get needs to emit an odor that flies find very offensive

When they encounter this, they turn around and fly away.

One thing you need to know is that repellents are not 100% guaranteed to work, as there are some insects that might push through the odor and still attack your alpacas.

Like I mentioned earlier, a good fly spray will have a combination of both repellent and killing properties making it very effective.

Can you use horse fly sprays on alpacas?

Alpacas and horses are both farm animals that are disturbed by flies and you can absolutely use the same fly sprays for both animals.

Fly sprays that are made for horses also contain the same properties that will work to kill or repel flies that also plague alpacas.

In my farm, where I have some horses and alpacas, I use the same fly sprays for them and have not had any issues.

Do alpacas get flystrike?

Alpacas can be infected with flystrike and this is a very difficult situation to deal with in your farm.

According to this Wikipedia article, flystrike is a condition in which your alpacas are infected by one or several species of flies.

What happens is that the flies lay their eggs in the open wounds of your animals and this can lead to a more terrible infection.

When this happens it can lead to death in extreme cases

So you want to make sure that you get rid of all fly infestation before it becomes a burden and causes more harm to your farm animals.

Are fly sprays effective for alpacas?

Fly sprays are very effective for alpacas as long as you are following the recommended instructions.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strictly regulates all pesticides

This means pesticides are not only safe, but they’re also super safe.

In order for them to be useful against pests, you have to follow the instructions on the label to the letter.

The label on pesticides is a regulated, legal document that details the lawful method of using the pesticide.

The label is the law. If you don’t follow the label you’re violating federal law.

Why does this matter? Well, fly spray is a pesticide.

Are fly sprays safe around children and pets?

This depends on the fly spray in question.

Those made with oils will be very safe to use around children and pets. While some will have natural allergies which is why we say “it depends”.

For the most part, fly sprays are safe to use around your home and your pets.

One thing you need to know is that when looking through the ingredients, if you come across any hard to pronounce words, then you want to skip using them.

If the spray gets in your child’s eyes or mouth, rinse immediately with water and follow the directions on the bottle listed for situations like that.

This is an effective fly spray that comes already mixed in a 32 ounce pump spray bottle.
