What Are The Health Benefits Of Bananas To Turkeys?

Can Turkeys Eat Bananas
  1. Vitamins

A good number of essential vitamins can be found in a banana serving such as Vitamins C, B6 and B12.

Vitamin B6 is important for the turkeys nervous system. Inadequate levels of this vitamin may cause nervous behavior among young turkey poults.

Vitamin C as we all know is important for development and growth of the turkeys from their poults till they are matured.

  1. Fiber

Fiber is an important element to have in your turkeys diet to enable them digest food properly.

Bananas contain a lot of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber melts in fluids to polymerize during digestion and this helps to improve the blood sugar levels in your turkeys.

  1. Potassium

Bananas are a rich source of the mineral potassium. Potassium is essential in many turkeys’ functions and processes. It is important for the dietary habits of turkeys.

Potassium deficiency may cause a reduction in how they eat which can lead ultimately to weight loss and other health related issues.

  1. Magnesium

Magnesium is also found in adequate levels in bananas. Magnesium is involved in a variety of turkey health issues, including body weight and bone development.

Magnesium is required for cell function and bone development.

It also works hand in hand with calcium and phosphorus, as such it is important that these nutrients are present in adequate quantities for your turkeys.

  1. Carbohydrates

A cupful of banana serving contains about 22.8 grams of carbs. Depending on whether it is ripe or unripe bananas, the level of carbohydrates in a banana can be higher or lower.

An unripe banana has more starch and during the ripening process, the starch is converted into sugars such as fructose, lactose and glucose.

Here is a comprehensive list I wrote on what do turkeys eat.

How Often Should I Feed Them Bananas?

Just like every other fruit and vegetables, bananas are treats and should be fed in moderation to your turkeys.

No matter how much your turkeys seem to like bananas, you shouldn’t replace their feed entirely with bananas.

The nutrients found in bananas are necessary for the growth of your turkeys, however, in excess, these nutrients can be detrimental to their health.

Moreover, the banana contains a lot of sugar, which is harmful in large quantities.

In moderation, bananas can be nutritious, especially when compared to sugary processed foods.

Baby turkeys can eat bananas from time to time, it would give them some of the nutrients they require.

However before feeding them bananas ensure the poults are already about 6 weeks of age.

From hatching till that period they are to be placed strictly on a turkey starter or gamebird feed as it has all the necessary nutrients, especially protein which they require to develop.

Turkeys can as well eat the peels of the banana. But if you are going to be feeding them the peels, ensure you thoroughly wash it.

The skin might have gathered dangerous chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides used by farmers during planting

In addition, most of the time, the skin is tough.

If you simply give your turkeys an unopened banana or toss them the skin, they may injure themselves or make it difficult to eat.

You could feed them the peel after it has ripened and gone soft.

Also, it is possible for you to boil it before serving it to them to make it easier for them to eat.

Slicing the skin will also make it more appealing to them and easier for them to consume.

Banana bread is a processed food. It is a type of bread made out from mashed bananas, wheat, salt and sugar.

Due to the high sugar content in banana bread, it is not exactly advisable to feed banana bread to your turkeys.

I know you might see it as a great way to treat your turkeys especially since you know,  they would most likely eat anything you give to them.

However, it is more like feeding them junk food that in excess can cause them health problems.
